The latest iteration of the classic tactical series is once again set during the fall of the Han Dynasty in ancient China; where battles take place in a boundary-free scramble for land. The game’s map showcases the territory captured and the thrill of expansion using a simplified color system – paying homage to the original Romance of The Three Kingdoms XIV, released on PC back in 1985. Everything from war to diplomatic affairs will be geared toward managing and gathering land as players attempt to spread their strategies at will across the vast China map.

The bottom line here is that if you like games like Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia then you will most likely enjoy Romance of the Three Kingdoms, if you are a fan of the previous versions then this may well tickle your fancy. Even if you just enjoy tactical strategy games, this is a great chance to have a different nationality to the standard US, or sometimes UK ones we are used to. A hefty price tag, so maybe wait for a sale but there’s a decent bit of replayability here too.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV has very few faults, fundamentally it’s an incredibly polished game that has years of experience and a strong fan base attached to it. The flaws I found were all nitpicky and biased, which I hold against myself and not the game (as this was my first experience playing the franchise, having been a fan of similar titles for years). The historical accuracies, customisation, and freedom to achieve your goals in any way you see fit, creates replayability that’ll last for a while to come. I can always rely on the fact that in Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV, where there’s a will, there’s a Wei.
