MONSTER
The original Shantae adventure returns! First released in 2002, Shantae is the classic action-adventure-platformer that introduced players to the fan-favorite Half-Genie heroine. In her debut title, Shantae hair-whips, dances, and transforms as she seeks out four elemental stones hidden throughout Sequin Land to put a stop to the nefarious lady pirate, Risky Boots. During her quest, she'll explore treacherous labyrinths, gain amazing new powers, conquer mini-games, and meet up with friends such as Bolo, Sky, and Rottytops! This version of the game includes both the standard Game Boy Color mode and the Game Boy Advance-enhanced mode!

Shantae is an excellent port, starting off a promising new line of GBC ports to Switch. While there were minor gripes with the inability to remap controls or borders, and the saving issues I had are pretty concerning, the port is otherwise outstanding, and makes me absolutely hungry to see other GBC classics launch in this emulator: especially if the pixel scaling continues to be just as outstanding! As for the game itself, it’s also still an excellent first installment in the franchise.

As a straightforward port of the GBC classic, Shantae works quite well. Minor issues like button remapping aside, once you get over a few things like the lack of a map and a more brutal life system, you'll find this to be a classic platformer that shows off how good this series and WayForward were from the beginning. Shantae fans who only own a PlayStation system will be very happy with this, and we hope that this means Xbox and PC fans will also be able to get this game on their platform of choice soon.

The original Shantae is a lovely little game that too few people were able to experience, so I’m thrilled that it’s available for mass consumption on the eShop. Franchise fans should, of course, jump on this as soon as humanly possible, but folks curious about the series or who just want some GBC nostalgia will enjoy it too.

Not only is this an incredibly charming, amusing adventure introducing an iconic cast of characters, but it’s also a sheer technical marvel when you remember that it was designed solely for the GameBoy Colour. Although it might not be Shantae’s most outstanding performance, fans of the series and retro gaming alike would be foolish not to at least give this excellent updated port a go on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, or PlayStation 5. So, why should you play the original Shantae? - You’re a fan of the Shantae series and want to explore its origins. - Retro platformers are up your alley. - Gorgeous pixel art and catchy chiptune soundtrack. - Satisfying dungeon design akin to older Zelda titles. But why shouldn’t you play the original Shantae? - Dated gameplay compared to the rest of the series. - Controls are at times clunky and frustrating. - Won’t appeal to those not fond of retro games. A review code on Nintendo Switch was kindly provided for the purpose of our original Shantae review.
