She follows her own sense of justice to protect Shibuya from forces with dangerous ideals and illegal drugs that turn people into monsters. Marin, who seeks liberation. The story of Reynatis receives praise for its intriguing urban fantasy premise and thematic depth, with several critics highlighting its exploration of social issues and unique world-building. GamingTrend and Siliconera commend the game’s blend of modern urban fantasy with social commentary, noting its examination of freedom versus order and its collaboration with The World Ends With You, which adds layers to its narrative. Inverse emphasizes the narrative’s strength, describing it as rich with lore and character development, while Push Square appreciates the dual protagonist arcs set in a magical Shibuya. The game’s focus on societal norms, discrimination, and the duality of human nature—particularly through Marin and Sari’s perspectives—resonates with reviewers like Cubed3 and GamingTrend, who see it as a compelling framework. Additionally, optional text messages and nuanced interactions among supporting characters, such as the Shibuya Owl group, are cited as engaging elements by Impulsegamer and others. However, the story faces criticism for its pacing, character development, and narrative execution. Checkpoint Gaming and Impulsegamer point to uneven pacing and underdeveloped lead characters, with the latter noting that the protagonists feel bland compared to the more dynamic interactions of the supporting cast. Cubed3 and GLHF highlight issues with esoteric terminology, lack of English audio, and excessive dramatic speeches, which detract from immersion. RPGamer and IGN Italia criticize the incoherent direction and unresolved plot points, while Vandal and God is a Geek describe the story as derivative, messy, or clichéd. Pure Nintendo and Noisy Pixel further argue that the narrative feels convoluted or rushed, with heavy-handed melodrama and a lack of emotional resonance in key moments. These critiques suggest that while the game’s ideas are ambitious, their implementation often falls short of expectations. Overall, the consensus among critics is that Reynatis has a promising concept but struggles with execution. Positive reviews underscore its thematic ambition, world-building, and character dynamics, with GamingTrend, Siliconera, and Inverse praising its social commentary and lore. Yet, the negatives—pacing inconsistencies, underdeveloped protagonists, and narrative flaws—create a divide in reception. While some, like TheSixthAxis, acknowledge strong character moments despite a flawed structure, others, such as Vandal and Noisy Pixel, find the story unengaging or unsatisfying. The mixed feedback reflects a game that aspires to be profound but is hindered by its own complexity and uneven delivery, leaving players divided between its potential and its shortcomings.

The gameplay of Reynatis receives praise for its innovative mechanics and engaging core systems, with several critics highlighting its unique blend of exploration and combat. Checkpoint Gaming and Nintendo Insider both commend the dual "Liberated" and "Suppressed" modes, which add depth to the action-RPG framework by encouraging players to balance offensive and defensive strategies. The "Hoodie System" introduced by GamingTrend (on both Switch and PS5) is noted for tying thematic elements to gameplay, while the two-protagonist dynamic and customizable abilities through graffiti pieces, as mentioned by TheSixthAxis, offer a sense of adaptability. Additionally, the game’s combat system is described as "thrilling and satisfying" by GamingTrend (Switch) and "intriguing" by Pocket Tactics, with some critics, like Nintendo Insider, emphasizing the rewarding nature of risky play. The variety in character playstyles and the initial challenge of the combat loop, as observed by TheSixthAxis, suggest that the game’s foundation has potential, particularly in its strategic and exploratory elements. However, the gameplay is frequently criticized for its repetitive design and unpolished execution. Cubed3 and GamingTrend (PS5) point to "repetitive dungeon design" and "limited exploration," which detract from the experience despite the game’s creative ideas. Impulsegamer and GLHF on Sports Illustrated argue that the combat system, while conceptually interesting, suffers from poor implementation, with "subpar execution" and "flawed dual-mode system" that prioritize magic spam over strategy. Camera issues, floaty controls, and frame-rate drops are recurring complaints, as noted by Pure Nintendo, RPG Fan, and SpazioGames, which hinder immersion and responsiveness. Critics like IGN Italia and Inverse also highlight a lack of tactical depth, with simplistic mechanics and "low challenge" that make battles feel unfulfilling. The "Burst Liberation" mechanic, while present, is deemed "not particularly original" by God is a Geek, and boss fights are criticized for being either too easy or frustratingly un-dodgeable. These flaws create a sense of stagnation, even as the game’s systems are initially promising. Overall, the critics’ opinions on Reynatis’ gameplay are split between its creative concepts and their execution. While titles like Checkpoint Gaming, Nintendo Insider, and TheSixthAxis appreciate the game’s unique modes and strategic potential, many others, including Impulsegamer, GLHF on Sports Illustrated, and RPG Fan, find the experience marred by repetition, unpolished mechanics, and a lack of depth. The "Hoodie System" and dual-mode combat are seen as standout features, but their impact is often undermined by technical issues and design shortcomings. Though some praise the balance between exploration and combat, the consensus leans toward the game’s core mechanics feeling underdeveloped or inconsistent, with a "bland" and "unpolished" experience that fails to fully realize its potential. The mixed reception suggests that Reynatis has ambitious ideas but struggles to deliver a cohesive, engaging gameplay loop that sustains interest over time.

The reviews of Reynatis highlight a mixed reception for its graphics and visual design, with several critics praising its environmental recreation and art direction. GamingTrend and Nintendo Insider commend the "standout" environment design, noting the "stylized recreation of Shibuya" and "outstanding lighting and colors," while Impulsegamer and TheSixthAxis appreciate the "visually appealing" depiction of Shibuya on the Switch, emphasizing its "bright lights" and "iconic landmarks." Push Square lauds the "beautiful visuals" and the "magical graffiti" that enhance the setting, and GLHF on Sports Illustrated acknowledges the "strong art style" and "excellent character designs" as positive contributions. These critiques suggest that the game’s attention to detail in capturing specific locations, particularly Shibuya, is a notable strength, reflecting a dedication to authenticity and creative presentation that resonates with some reviewers. However, the negatives are more consistent, particularly regarding character models, animations, and technical execution. Cubed3 and SpazioGames criticize the visuals as "underwhelming," "low budget," and "basic," with the latter pointing to "low-resolution textures," "recycled NPC models," and "micro-loading interruptions." RPGamer and IGN Italia describe character animations as "outdated" and "awkward," while Vandal and God is a Geek call them "unpolished" and "lacking personality," with some comparing them to "PS3 game" or "rough sketches." Pocket Tactics and Nintendo Insider also note a "disparity between character design and environment design," and Worth Playing highlights "poorly animated character models" and "basic cutscenes." These criticisms underscore a disconnect between the game’s ambitious world-building and its technical shortcomings, particularly in character representation and performance stability. The overall consensus leans toward a balanced but critical assessment, acknowledging the game’s dedication to Shibuya’s recreation while highlighting its flaws. While some reviewers, like GamingTrend and TheSixthAxis, recognize the "love and detail" poured into the environments, others, such as SpazioGames and Vandal, argue that the visuals fail to meet modern standards due to technical limitations and a lack of polish. The contrast between the vibrant, stylized cityscapes and the stiff, dated character animations is a recurring theme, with RPG Fan noting the "flat city environments" and "stiff character animations" as a major drawback. Despite these issues, the game’s art direction and environmental design are seen as commendable, though they are often overshadowed by the technical and aesthetic shortcomings that leave many critics underwhelmed.

The sound design and music of Reynatis received widespread praise from multiple critics, with Yoko Shimomura’s work being a central highlight. Reviewers like Checkpoint Gaming and Cubed3 lauded the soundtrack as "great" and a "significant strength," respectively, emphasizing its emotionally resonant melodies and atmospheric complement to gameplay. Pocket Tactics and RPGamer noted the "wonderful" and "engaging" compositions, with the latter appreciating how the music effectively contrasts the game’s settings. Noisy Pixel went as far as calling the score "absolutely phenomenal," while God is a Geek and Worth Playing highlighted its authenticity and ability to elevate the experience. The diversity and grandeur of the soundtrack, particularly its "classic Shimomura feel," were frequently cited as strengths, with many reviewers agreeing that the music authentically supports the game’s fantasy themes and enhances immersion. However, several critics pointed out notable shortcomings. Impulsegamer and TheSixthAxis criticized the score for lacking "punch" and "impact" in specific areas, such as the fog-gated world of Another, while IGN Italia and Vandal found it "underwhelming" and "lacking innovation," comparing it unfavorably to Shimomura’s previous works. Inverse and GamingTrend (PS5) noted a lack of variety, with repetitive tracks and a "one-off mission" collaboration that felt unsubstantial. RPG Fan mentioned that the music occasionally became "forgettable" due to mixing issues, and GamingTrend (Switch) observed that the audio department was a "mix of highs and lows" because of the limited number of tracks. Additionally, Nintendo Insider and SpazioGames pointed to technical flaws, such as awkward character animations in cutscenes and unconvincing voice acting, which detracted from the overall audio experience. These critiques suggest that while the music was strong, it faced challenges in consistency and originality. Despite the mixed feedback, the overall consensus leans toward appreciation for Shimomura’s contributions, with many acknowledging her signature style and the soundtrack’s ability to enhance the game’s atmosphere. Critics like Cubed3 and Noisy Pixel emphasized its emotional depth and quality, while GamingTrend (Switch) and RPGamer noted its engaging and contrasting elements. However, the recurring complaints about repetition, limited track count, and technical issues (e.g., mixing, lack of innovation) created a divide in perceptions of its impact. While GLHF and Worth Playing still found the music "largely excellent," others like Vandal and IGN Italia felt it fell short of expectations. Ultimately, the soundtrack is seen as a standout feature with room for improvement, reflecting a balance between admiration for Shimomura’s artistry and frustration with its execution in certain areas.

REYNATIS shines on PS5 with smooth 60fps, stable controls, and polish, while Switch is a crash-prone, glitch-ridden mess. Despite minor PS5 hiccups, its optimization dwarfs Switch’s persistent frame drops, UI glitches, and systemic issues—hardware limits make PS5 the only viable choice.

The technical performance of REYNATIS varies significantly across platforms, with the PlayStation 5 receiving more favorable remarks. GamingTrend highlighted the PS5 version as "flawless" with a stable 60 fps, full controller rebinding, and frequent autosaves, while Inverse noted its "great art style" despite some control floatiness in late-game battles. SpazioGames acknowledged "interesting artistic elements" that offset technical shortcomings, and Vandal praised its "mixed presentation" even as they critiqued camera angles and loading interruptions. These positives suggest the PS5 version benefits from better optimization and hardware capabilities, offering a smoother experience compared to the Switch. However, the PS5 is not without flaws, as Inverse and SpazioGames pointed out minor issues like jankiness and pop-in, which, while less severe, still impact immersion. On the Nintendo Switch, the technical performance is overwhelmingly criticized. Checkpoint Gaming, Cubed3, Impulsegamer, and Nintendo Insider all cited "noticeable performance problems," "inconsistent framerate," and "frame-pacing issues," with some noting crashes and systemic glitches. Pocket Tactics and Siliconera specifically mentioned "poor frame rate" and "crashes during boss battles," while Pure Nintendo highlighted "systemic glitches" and UI issues. RPGamer and Siliconera also criticized the Switch for "frame rate issues" and "bad camera angles in cramped environments." These recurring complaints paint a picture of a version that struggles to meet expectations, with performance hiccups disrupting gameplay and making it difficult to recommend. The Switch’s hardware limitations appear to be a key factor, as even post-patch improvements from Nintendo Insider could not fully resolve the instability. Overall, the consensus among critics is that REYNATIS is technically superior on the PlayStation 5, though not flawless, while the Nintendo Switch version faces persistent performance challenges. GamingTrend and Inverse emphasized the PS5’s stability and polish, contrasting sharply with Switch reviews that repeatedly highlighted crashes, frame drops, and UI glitches. While some critics like SpazioGames and Vandal acknowledged artistic strengths on the PS5, the Switch’s issues seem to overshadow its merits. The disparity in performance between platforms underscores the game’s struggle to adapt effectively to the Switch’s hardware, with multiple reviewers (including Cubed3, Impulsegamer, and Pocket Tactics) advising players to test the PS5 version first. This divide suggests that the Switch version may not fully realize the game’s potential, leaving it as a less appealing choice for those prioritizing technical reliability.

The reviewers highlight some positive aspects of Reynatis’ replay value, particularly its side quests and exploration elements. Cubed3 acknowledges that these quests contribute to world-building, even if they feel perfunctory, while Nintendo Insider notes that they can extend chapter lengths and maintain player engagement through an "engaging gameplay loop." RPGamer also points to side quests offering "some engaging story elements," suggesting that the narrative depth and environmental details might provide a reason to revisit the game. Additionally, Push Square mentions that side quests impact the environment and introduce new combat abilities, which could add variety to subsequent playthroughs. These elements indicate that while not groundbreaking, the game’s design does offer minor incentives for players to explore its world beyond the main story. However, the negatives surrounding replay value are more pronounced. Critics like Inverse and SpazioGames emphasize that side quests lack variety, with Inverse describing them as "dozens of sidequests with limited variety" and SpazioGames criticizing the "monotonous combat system, exploration, and level design." Push Square and Worth Playing both note that the repetitive nature of gameplay and design choices, such as recycled environments and "baffling design choices," do not encourage replaying. Pure Nintendo points out the game’s brevity, stating it lasts only 30–40 hours, which might make it less appealing for those seeking extended content. These critiques suggest that the game’s mechanics and structure fail to sustain long-term interest, with many reviewers feeling the experience becomes stale or unremarkable after a single playthrough. Overall, the consensus among critics is that Reynatis has limited replay value, with its strengths in world-building and side quests overshadowed by repetitive systems and underdeveloped mechanics. While some praise the narrative elements and gameplay loop, the majority argue that the lack of meaningful progression, recycled environments, and modest production values make it a one-time experience. Nintendo Insider and Cubed3 offer slightly more balanced views, acknowledging minor engagement factors, but the PS5-focused critics like Inverse, SpazioGames, and Worth Playing are more critical, emphasizing that the game’s shortcomings in innovation and depth deter repeated play. The lack of compelling reasons to return—despite some initial charm—suggests that Reynatis may not satisfy players seeking a highly replayable title.

The overall sentiment of the critics regarding Reynatis is marked by a recognition of its positive elements, particularly its engaging combat system, unique gameplay mechanics, and strong narrative potential. Many reviewers highlight the game's charm, with Nintendo Insider praising its "engaging combat and exploration" and "solid story premise," while Siliconera commends its "story and combat system." Checkpoint Gaming and GamingTrend both acknowledge the game's "unique combat system" and "adventure worth experiencing," despite its flaws. Additionally, the game's soundtrack, especially the work of Yoko Shimomura, is frequently noted as a standout feature, with SpazioGames calling it the "exceptional soundtrack" and Inverse mentioning "strong visual and musical elements." These positives suggest that Reynatis has a compelling foundation that could appeal to fans of action-RPGs and those who appreciate atmospheric storytelling. However, the negatives are equally prominent, with critics pointing out significant technical and design shortcomings. Issues such as outdated graphics, poor performance on the Nintendo Switch, and frame rate problems are repeatedly mentioned by GamingTrend, Pocket Tactics, and Nintendo Insider. Impulsegamer and RPGamer criticize the game as "undercooked and unpolished," with "baffling decisions" and "poor execution in story and gameplay." GLHF on Sports Illustrated and God is a Geek note that the game "falls short due to poor execution" and "feels out of its time," respectively. IGN Italia and RPG Fan point to a lack of cohesion and unmet expectations, while Worth Playing compares it unfavorably to The World Ends with You. These criticisms suggest that Reynatis struggles with polish, consistency, and optimization, which detract from the overall experience. Despite the mixed reception, the critics generally agree that Reynatis has potential but is held back by its flaws. While some recommend trying the game on a different platform or waiting for future updates, others suggest testing the demo first to gauge interest. TheSixthAxis calls it a "love it or hate it" game, and Inverse gives it a 6/10, indicating it's a flawed but occasionally satisfying experience. The consensus leans toward a tentative or conditional recommendation, with many acknowledging that the game's charm and unique combat system might appeal to niche audiences, particularly action-JRPG fans. However, the technical issues and underdeveloped elements prevent it from being a must-play title for the broader gaming community.

TL;DR

Reynatis is a charm-filled action-RPG with stellar combat, a gripping narrative, and Yoko Shimomura’s standout soundtrack, but its outdated graphics, technical glitches, and unpolished design torpedo the experience. A love-it-or-hate-it title with niche appeal, it’s best tried via demo or on a stronger platform—flawed but occasionally thrilling for action-JRPG fans.
