The story of Lost Judgment has garnered a generally positive reception among critics, with many praising its intricate narrative and the way it tackles serious themes such as bullying, suicide, and justice. Reviewers like MGG Spain highlighted the depth and sensitivity with which the game addresses these societal issues, while GamingBolt noted the strong narrative threads that intertwine effectively throughout the plot. Critics such as Easy Allies and VGC appreciated the character development and the emotional investment players feel in the protagonist, Takayuki Yagami, and his journey. The balance of humor and darker themes was also commended, with IGN Portugal and Screen Rant noting how the game successfully navigates between lighthearted moments and serious storytelling. However, several critics pointed out notable weaknesses in the narrative structure and execution. TheXboxHub and Comicbook.com expressed disappointment, suggesting that the story lacks the engagement and depth of its predecessor, with pacing issues and predictable twists undermining the overall experience. Cubed3 echoed this sentiment, mentioning that the story can feel heavy-handed and struggles with cultural translation. Additionally, some critics, like GameSkinny and Player 2, noted that while the themes are compelling, the narrative links between different arcs could be stronger, leading to a less cohesive storytelling experience overall. Despite these criticisms, the overall consensus among reviewers leans towards a favorable view of Lost Judgment's story. While some critics, such as IGN and Meristation, noted pacing issues and predictability, the majority recognized the game’s ambition in addressing complex social issues and the engaging nature of its plot. Many reviewers, including Hardcore Gamer and Digital Chumps, emphasized the compelling narrative and well-developed characters that keep players invested throughout the game. However, the gameplay is not without its criticisms. Several reviewers, including Shacknews and Comicbook.com, argue that the hand-to-hand combat feels dated and that many gameplay mechanics have only seen slight tweaks, leading to a sense of monotony. However, not all feedback is overwhelmingly positive. Some critics, such as GamePro Germany and IGN Adria, express disappointment with the soundtrack, describing it as generic and less memorable compared to previous entries in the series. The English voice acting has also faced scrutiny; GameMAG notes that while the Japanese track excels in authenticity, the English version lacks the same level of conviction. Critics like TheXboxHub point out that the English dub feels off, possibly due to pandemic-related recording conditions, and there are mentions of minor issues with lip-syncing, particularly in Press Start Australia’s review. These concerns detract from the otherwise strong audio experience. Overall, the consensus among critics is that Lost Judgment delivers a commendable audio experience, characterized by high-quality voice acting and effective sound design that enhances gameplay immersion.
