Overview

Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 tells the story of what happened to the voxel Earth after the events of the first installment. It cleverly introduces elements from Earth Defense Force 6 and features the Wing Diver Shooter, who didn’t make it into the previous game. This latest installment is filled with more love for the Earth Defense Force series (and Earth!) than ever before!

Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 takes the familiar setup of the main series and just makes it more upbeat. Welcome to the EDF The Earth Defense Force series has always embraced a high level of cheesiness, and the World Brothers spin-off is no exception.

Earth Defence Force: World Brothers 2 is a fantastic time and absolutely worth picking up for Earth Defence Force addicts like myself or anyone who fancies a smooth entry point to this legendary series. It continues to make smart refinements to the series’ core gameplay loops that make it more accessible, fluid, and dynamic than ever before while also getting rid of some of the rough edges that could make the mainline entries a bit of a chore to play.

Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 is super accessible and very easy to get into, but deceptively difficult to master. Gung ho tactics will only get you so far, and despite its jolly nature, things do get quite dark and a sense of peril sets in when things start to ramp up and the sheer scope of the alien threat starts to overwhelm your team.

Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 is a bit of a mixed bag. It probably has the best gameplay in the series, but loses some of the scope and campiness of the mainline games. Also, the timing of its release is weird, coming out only 2 months after Earth Defense Force 6. While I reviewed the PS5 version of World Brothers 2, and found it ran beautifully, at the time of preorder, the Switch version was $46.79 CAD, while the PlayStation version was $66.99. That’s pretty major savings to consider if cost is an issue. If you’ve never played an Earth Defense Force game before, Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 would be a great place to start. If you’re already a diehard EDF fan, then this is a quality entry. I just wish the series staggered its releases more.

In a way, I get it: there isn’t a lot that differs Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 from its predecessor. It’s a bunch of new levels and characters, with the added benefit of feeling a bit more polished than before. With that being said, just being able to enjoy more of a shockingly competent formula with slightly better visual effects, less glitches and even more content is already great in my books. It’s still tons of fun, so “more of the same” in this case is a good thing.
