MONSTER
Voez is played by touching falling notes in time with the music. Set in a fictional town named Lan Kong Town, which is modelled after Yilan in Taiwan, the story is centred around six high school students who form a band that eventually achieves international fame. Gameplay is simple, requiring players to touch vertically falling notes that have hit a bar on the bottom of the screen. Depending on the song, the number of lanes for the notes increases and they shift side to side, making the screen look as if it is dancing to the music. There are over 100 songs in the library. Three difficulty levels Easy, Hard and Special are available. Players are able to choose difficulty levels according to their skill so they may enjoy all pieces.

VOEZ is a rhythm action game, but unlike the more well-known titles like Project Diva and Guitar Hero, you don’t push buttons in time to the notes. The game’s interface is a series of lines, one horizontal and several vertical, note markers flow down from the top of the screen to the bottom where you perform the required action to ‘play’ the note. Movements required include genre stalwarts such as tap and hold, but will be regularly interspersed with times you’ll need to swipe, and others where you’ll need to slide as the path changes. It doesn’t sound very special but it’s all down to how it’s presented. The game has a tracklist of over a hundred songs ranging from Pop to Trance, and while the rhythms and note placement change they’re all presented the same way.

VOEZ on the Nintendo Switch is a very fun, hectic and fast-paced rhythm game. I loved the song selection but, as expected, your mileage may vary. The game is certainly easy to play but hard to master, especially if you want to unlock every Diary entry. Unlike its mobile counterpart on iOS and Android, which is an F2P release with microtransactions to permanently unlock songs, the Switch version features a single $24.99 price for the game and all songs, in the end making it a better value. With 100+ songs, you’ll spend hours playing before you’ve enjoyed all of them at least once!
