Overview

"Super Hyperactive Ninja is a remake (even could be considered a reboot) of the 2010 Android game Hyperactive Ninja, adapted for non-touch controls and with lots of new mechanics. The evil Shôgun has stolen all the coffee from the secret village of Kohinomura. You will play as Kohimaru, one of the Coffee-Nin, to defeat the Shôgun's army of evil ninjas, monks and even supernatural beings like onis and ghost, save your fellows and recover the legendary coffee, who it's said to be able to grant infinite energy to the one who takes it whole without milk. Coffee runs the world! And the Coffee-Nin! Kohimaru and his friends can perform awesome tricks using the power of the caffeine, but doing so drains a lot of energy! So you must complete the levels before you fall asleep and pick up all the scattered coffees you find to prevent it. Race against your cruelest enemy: SLUMBER!"

Super Hyperactive Ninja fits in the realm of Super Meat Boy-style platformers, but has its own touches added in. Having to keep an eye on the caffeine meter while balancing the use of Hyperactive mode forces you to think strategically. The challenging nature can be fun and frustrating, but it's worth the time.

Super Hyperactive Ninja is a game that will fit in well with those who enjoy a good speedrunning adventure or simply want to find the next challenging platformer. Whilst there may not be much replayability besides going back for the S-rank, there are certainly some bragging points to be earned for anyone who can master this surprisingly difficult adventure.

Overall, the design of Super Hyperactive Ninja is fun and engaging, but I think that more could have been done with the caffeine theme to make it feel less generic. The music is good and though the gameplay can be frustrating, people who love a challenge with find Super Hyperactive Ninja to be worth their time.

Super Hyperactive Ninja is a fast-paced, action-platformer that fails to keep up the pace. Although there is some fun to be had with a decent content load and speed running potential, there just isn’t enough to keep you motivated.

Super Hyperactive Ninja feels phoned in. Though the Hyperactive Mode is a novel concept, the execution leaves something to be desired. The world of ninjas meets the world of java in JanduSoft and Grimorio of Games’ platformer Super Hyperactive Ninja.

Cheap level design, uninspired visuals, and poor controls make this a game that’s difficult to recommend, but moments of enjoyable gameplay can still be found for those who look hard enough. Even so, there’s no shortage of excellent platformers on the eShop at the moment, so you’d be best served passing on this one. If you’re looking for a challenging, retro-inspired side scrolling ninja game, go play The Messenger instead.

Super Hyperactive Ninja may have been a decent game if its stodgy controls, poor collision detection and its shower of cheap deaths didn’t dramatically hold the game back. There’s nothing wrong with a game that wants to seriously challenge its players, but when that challenge comes solely from its poor development and baffling design choices, it’s far too hard to overlook, or more importantly, enjoy. This game was tested and reviewed on Xbox One.
