Spelunker HD returns! Spelunker HD, which was released for PlayStation 3 in 2009 and won the PlayStation Store Special Award at the PlayStation Awards that year, has been revived with a full remake on PlayStation 4 and Switch as Ganso Minna de Spelunker. Ganso Minna de Spelunker is an action game in which the cave explorer Spelunker, said to be “the weakest chracter in video game history,” explores caves full of mystery. With 100 stages consisting of abandoned mines, underground lakes, ancient ruins, glaciers, and more, Spelunker’s goal is to reach the depths of each cave. Caves are full of dangers including natural terrain, cave creatures, and malicious traps—and enemies and traps that appear to be traces of an unknown civilization will appear in the latter half of the cavern. Spelunker must overcome these obstacles by properly utilizing items such as bombs, flares, portable fans, and more, as well as his jump technique. But be cautious, as Spelunker is quite weak! If you fall from your own height, or get hit by bat poop, you will die. Spelunker’s weakness, or his “fragile constitution,” gives the game a moderate sense of tension and rhythm, making it more interesting as an action game.

People like to call games the Dark Souls of whatever but Dark Souls is the Spelunker of action RPGs. With gratifying gameplay that constantly makes you stay on your toes, I'm very happy that this classic is back and it's more fully-featured than ever before.

While the average player may be better off waiting until the arrival of the Spelunky games on Switch, Spelunker HD Deluxe has charms of its own. The multiplayer modes alone add a lot of value to the game provided you can find people to play with, and pushing up the leaderboards in single-player is quite satisfying as well. Its adherence to the fussy rules of a rather early computer game will surely turn some away, but approach it on its own terms and you’ll find a challenging adventure that rewards you for your patience and investment in its mechanics. SwitchArcade Score: 4/5 New Releases Shadowverse: Champion’s Battle ($49.99) SwitchArcade Highlight! If you’ve been around the mobile card game circuit a few times, you probably know Shadowverse.

Those fond of the Spelunker series will find plenty to like about Spelunker HD Deluxe, and those that enjoy challenging retro games will probably get a kick out of it too. It perhaps stays a little too close to its roots for the majority of modern audiences, and the new 3D visuals can make some of its pitfalls harder to spot, which is a nuisance, but for the most part this is a solid remake of a blast from the past.

It looks a bit better and it does feature a few new modes that vastly improve its overall replayability. However, it is still infested with questionable design choices and intentionally clunky controls tailor-made to irritate players in the most frustrating of ways. I get what it was supposed to do, but there are countless difficult platformers out there that will provide you with the same level of anger and frustration, but with much better controls and physics.
