The opinions on the story of One Piece Odyssey reveal a mix of appreciation for its nostalgic elements and the charm of its characters. Critics such as IGN and God is a Geek highlight the engaging narrative that combines familiar arcs with new twists, emphasizing the emotional depth and character dynamics present in the game. The involvement of Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, is often noted as a significant factor that adds authenticity to the story, with Easy Allies and But Why Tho? praising the exploration of new characters like Lim and Adio, which enriches the overall experience. Additionally, some reviewers, including Gamer.no and Digital Trends, commend the well-written plot and dialogue, noting that the game successfully captures the essence of the One Piece universe while providing a fresh perspective on classic moments. However, a considerable number of critics express dissatisfaction with the overall narrative execution, pointing out various shortcomings. Impulsegamer and PC Invasion specifically criticize the game for relying heavily on past story arcs with minimal innovation, leading to a predictable and uninspiring experience. Many reviewers, like Vandal and GameSpot, echo this sentiment, stating that the narrative lacks depth and originality, often feeling like filler content rather than a compelling new story. Critics such as RPGamer and SpazioGames also mention that the pacing suffers due to excessive backtracking and the underutilization of key characters, which detracts from the overall engagement of the narrative. Overall, the consensus among critics indicates a divided reception regarding the story of One Piece Odyssey. While some appreciate the nostalgic elements and character interactions, many others find the narrative lacking in originality and depth. Critics like Game Informer and WellPlayed summarize this sentiment well, noting that while the game has its engaging moments and nostalgic appeal, it ultimately struggles to deliver a cohesive and impactful story that resonates with both new and longtime fans. This dichotomy suggests that while One Piece Odyssey may satisfy die-hard fans with its familiar references, it may not fully meet the expectations for a compelling narrative experience.

The gameplay of One Piece Odyssey has garnered a variety of opinions, with many critics acknowledging its innovative aspects. The turn-based combat system, which incorporates a rock-paper-scissors mechanic, is praised for its strategic depth and engagement, as noted by critics like God is a Geek and Game Rant. The game allows players to utilize the unique abilities of each Straw Hat crew member, adding a layer of complexity to battles. Critics like Checkpoint Gaming and Hardcore Gamer also commend the engaging mechanics and the smooth RPG experience that the game offers, suggesting that there is a solid foundation for fans of the genre. Despite these positives, several reviewers express significant concerns about the gameplay's execution. Common criticisms include a lack of challenge and repetitive nature of combat, with many critics, such as Vandal and CGMagazine, pointing out that battles can become tedious due to their ease and the reuse of enemies. The linear level design and slow pacing are also recurring themes, with critics like Gamer.no and SomosXbox noting that the exploration feels uninspired and often leads to tedious backtracking. Furthermore, the hand-holding gameplay mechanics, as mentioned by SomosXbox, detract from the overall experience, making it feel less rewarding for seasoned players. Overall, the consensus among critics is mixed, with many acknowledging the potential of One Piece Odyssey while also highlighting its shortcomings. While the turn-based combat system is seen as a strong point, the lack of challenge, repetitive tasks, and pacing issues hinder the game's overall enjoyment. The graphics and visual design of One Piece Odyssey have received a largely positive reception from critics, with many praising the vibrant and colorful art style that effectively captures the essence of Eiichiro Oda's original work. Reviewers such as Game Informer and GAMINGbible highlighted the game's ability to translate the unique anime aesthetic into a 3D environment, creating visually stunning worlds filled with detailed character models and immersive backgrounds. Despite the positive feedback, several critics have pointed out notable drawbacks. A recurring concern is the absence of an English dub, which some reviewers, like GameSpot and Push Square, believe could detract from the experience for players who prefer English voiceovers. Additionally, while many found the soundtrack enjoyable, others, such as RPG Fan and Twinfinite, criticized it for lacking iconic tracks and feeling somewhat generic, suggesting that it doesn't elevate the overall experience as much as it could. GameOver.gr also mentioned that while the music complements the game, it could have been more impactful, indicating a divide in how memorable the compositions are perceived. Overall, the consensus among critics is that One Piece Odyssey features a solid sound design and a captivating soundtrack that enhances the gameplay experience. However, the lack of an English dub and some criticisms regarding the distinctiveness of the music create a nuanced reception. Critics like Noisy Pixel and PSX Brasil highlight the effective use of sound to enhance emotional moments, while others note that the soundtrack may not resonate with all players. Overall, the consensus is that the voice acting successfully captures the essence of the anime, with many reviewers commending the emotional delivery and character portrayals. However, a notable downside mentioned by several critics is the absence of an English voice acting option, which may disappoint some players who prefer dubbed versions. Critics such as Player 2 and PlaySense pointed out that the lack of an English dub could alienate newcomers or those less familiar with the original Japanese performances. While the subtitles are generally well-received, as noted by Shacknews and RPG Site, the reliance on Japanese voiceovers with English subtitles may not cater to all audiences, particularly those who are accustomed to English dubs. This limitation could hinder the overall accessibility of the game for a broader player base. In conclusion, the overall sentiment among critics regarding the voice acting in One Piece Odyssey leans heavily towards appreciation, particularly among fans of the series.
