MONSTER
Circle of Blood is a 2D adventure game played from a third-person perspective. The player uses a point-and-click interface to interact with the environment and to guide protagonist George Stobbart through the game's world. To solve puzzles and progress in the game, the player collects items that may be combined with one another, used on the environment, or given to non-player characters. The protagonist converses with NPCs via dialogue trees presented through "conversation icons" to learn about the game's puzzles and plot. Clues and other information are obtained by clicking on items in the inventory and on objects in the environment. The player navigates with a map, to which new locations are added as the story unfolds. Unlike in most adventure games at the time, the protagonist's death is possible, after which the player starts from the last save point.

Beautifully illustrated, hand-painted graphics combined with an entertainingly twisted plot makes this an eye-catching adventure to savor. If a picture is worth a thousand words then this review would have to be a novel to do true justice to Virgin Interactive's new adventure, Circle of Blood.

I thoroughly appreciated it from the opening sequence and found I didn't want to stop playing even when I was tired. Consequently, I finished it very quickly and it left me wanting more.

The other thing that depressed me was that with everything Circle of Blood had going for it -- a great plot, good acting, wonderful animation and elaborate background graphics -- most of the puzzles were too easy. There were a couple of good puzzles that stumped me -- in Ireland, I lamented for hours, unable to get past a goat.

Since it's fairly easy to find all the necessary objects, and you can safely talk to every character about almost every object, it's not much of a challenge to finish the game. There's only one storyline, one ending, and one mode of play (i.e. easy), so you're not likely to play the game through more than once. Therefore, I find it hard to recommend this game to anyone other than curious beginners.
