Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity
Touhou Koukishin ~ Adventures of Scarlet Curiosity is a 3D RPG released on 16 August during Comiket 86. An updated and remastered version of the game for PlayStation 4, as part of Play, Doujin!, was announced on December 28, 2015. The game was confirmed for localization on June 2, 2016, under XSeed Games, for the digital North American release under the shortened title of "Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity". In May 22, 2018, a Steam version was announced in XSEED's 2018 3rd Party Lineup Announcement Teaser Trailer. Adventures of Scarlet Curiosity is the first Touhou Project game to be shown in E3.

Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity grabbed me and never let go. It’s a fun game with great characters and combat, and it all comes together in a package that kept me glued to my PS4. It’s a shame that mainline Touhou games haven’t seen English localisations, but the series’ unique charm has been wonderfully captured by this game.

Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity is an entertaining blend of genres that breathes a palpable life into bullet hell games, taking them from a niche variety to one more accessible for casual players. The narrative and characters fall into decidedly JRPG stereotypes, but the plot does evolve into a more coherent and intriguing mystery than it first lets on.

While Scarlet Curiosity is certainly geared towards fans that already know a little bit about the Touhou lineage, those looking for a fun little diversion until Ys VIII reaches North America won’t be disappointed. Review code provided by the publisher.

To be perfectly honest, Scarlet Curiosity may not really appeal to you if you aren’t a big Touhou fan like I am, but on the plus side, it also isn’t the cost of a full game either, so if you get it on sale, you probably won’t feel too let down if you don’t end up enjoying it. Despite the occasional frame rate drop here and there, which I attribute to my old computer, Scarlet Curiosity actually ran smoother than I expected, and the control set-up felt really natural to play on a keyboard. As far as Touhou fan games go, Scarlet Curiosity is pretty looking and sounding, and while not as long or in-depth as a standard game, is also simple enough to pick up or ease back into, and low cost enough to at least give it a chance. So get ready to head into Gensokyō to help a vampire and her best meido out!

This is it Touhou fans, this is where it begins, with a pretty middle of the road action adventure game. It may not be the bullet-hell salvation we were all looking for, but it's a good start, and hopefully paves the way for more Touhou games in the future. * The product in this article was sent to us by the developer/company.
