The Novelist is the most personal and beautiful game I have ever experienced. The creator, Kent Hudson, has quite plainly poured his heart and soul into this game, and the outcome is genuinely something to behold. Never before have I felt so emotionally involved in the characters, their situation and potential future, as in this truly player-driven story. Mr Hudson’s creative masterpiece focuses on the Kaplans, a family like many others, faced with some of life’s many problems, looking for some answers, and taking the summer to try and find them.

The Novelist, then, is a game of endless compromise, and in that sense it is a quite remarkable simulation of family life. You work through it the best you can, trying to keep everyone happy but knowing that there will be triumphs and disappointments along the way, and that the best you can really hope for is to land somewhere in the middle.

If you haven’t been scared off by the concept it presents, then The Novelist shall likely prove a worthwhile experience.

It expertly captures the compromises of family life and the impossible decisions everyone has to face at some point — between personal happiness and family stability. The Novelist was reviewed using downloadable code provided by Kent Hudson.

But as a game of ideas, The Novelist works. It's not a challenging game, but the choices you have to make are. I played through the game twice, and was surprised to see how differently things were for the Kaplans in the end based on the different decisions I'd made.
