MONSTER
Skybolt Zack delivers a unique gaming experience - all the fun and excitement of an arcade platformer married with the feel of a Japanese rhythm game. Ditching the pixel perfect precision of traditional platformers, Skybolt Zack introduces new mechanics that are equally challenging but fresh and exciting. Players will have their dexterity and quick thinking tested in equal measure. Reacting to the enemies on screen, players must Dash and Rocket Punching and Charge Attack their way from enemy to enemy by colour matching the buttons on the gamepad to the enemies on screen before bouncing off of them to reach new heights. The higher the player climbs, the more difficult the game gets, but the more rewarding it becomes... Skybolt Zack is designed to prioritise gameplay above all else, featuring 48 frantic, colourful and challenging levels. The player is always in control of their success or failure, testing their fortitude with every failure and rewarding every success with intense euphoria!

Like a bolt of out of the blue, Skybolt Zack has truly won me over. It’s inventive, wholly original, and most importantly a lot of fun. Some might find the challenge it presents a little too steep as they make their way further into the game – situations can indeed get a little messy at times – but with practice and perseverance, no gauntlet it presents you with can’t be overcome. It just requires coordination and quick-thinking. Don’t be a fool; check it out if you like fast-paced platformers with a difference.

Unique and high quality indie games like Skybolt Zack don't come around often so if you enjoy 2D action games then give it a try.Skybolt Zack gameplay video → Polyroll Review Switch ★★★☆☆ Many modern 2D platformers are clearly inspired by the classics so here's one that's very similar to Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog. Polyroll has you play as an armadillo-like fellow who's on a mission to rescue his friends from a dastardly ruler known as Kaiser Kiwi.

You almost need to have a masochist tendency of taking pleasure in your own defeat with nobody else to blame but yourself. What makes failure even harder to digest is when realising that the track is clearly laid out before you with all the signposts there for you to read. Yet, the gratification of overcoming the addictive plough of constantly feeling rubbish and inadequate becomes all the more satisfying once you succeed.

Despite its initial learning curve, Skybolt Zack is one of the most inventive 2D platformers on Nintendo Switch, effortlessly balancing rhythmic fun and fair challenge.

Skybolt Zack is a gem of a game. The focus on speed and execution is well done, but the variety in levels and enemy designs ensures that the act doesn't get old. The various pathways do a great job of adding in some replay value, and the challenge modes give hardcore players something else to work with. Combined with a solid presentation, Skybolt Zack is one of those games that may be a pleasant surprise when compared to some of the bigger indie games in the field.

With a polished, colourful visual style and an excellent, reactive soundtrack, Skybolt Zack is a game with a unique feel and rewarding gameplay for players who are up for the challenge. It can be brutally unforgiving, however – and, given the tight level design, the cost of making just one tiny mistake can often feel overly punitive. It’s not for everyone, then, but for those players who do get their heads around Skybolt Zack’s fast pace and colour-based mechanics, there’s definitely enjoyment to be had here.

Skybolt Zack is an action-packed, engaging but all-together a little too unforgiving action-platformer-rhythm-thing. Despite its unforgiving nature, It is a game that even the most useless of people (me) will have fun with and will offer a huge amount of replayability for those looking for a challenge due to the unique difficulty system. Looks, sounds and plays great, the first outing from Devs Must Die is one well worth giving a go. Pros - Unique, fast-paced and engaging gameplay - Very satisfying when you can actually link together a chain - Looks and sounds great, with crisp, clean and colourful visuals and a great soundtrack that ramps up with the game - Extensive replayability as you try to go through more difficult paths Cons - Too unforgiving, with the challenge almost closing off certain stages from those who simply aren't good at the game - Streak interruption/touching the floor essentially grinds the game to a halt and makes it irrecoverable The links above are affiliate links.

Skybolt Zack is exactly the kind of game that benefits from playing the same stage over and over again. Learning the patterns and routes for each will eventually have you zipping through, but it’s going to take plenty of tenacity to get to that level. It’s definitely channelling Sonic, even beyond those homing attacks.
