While your protagonist can feel a bit chunky in tight spots, this tough platform shooter still plays smoothly overall While more mainstream and accessible titles are always great to take for a spin, sometimes you may be looking for something that will make you grit your teeth a little, and perhaps ragequit a few times for good measure.

With the sights set firmly on creating a precision platform experience that offers players a decent challenge without making you want to tear your hair out, Planet Cube: Edge undoubtedly delivers. With a punchy synth soundtrack that wonderfully matches the sharp throwback ‘Gameboy-2000’ aesthetic, it’s anything but square and will have you hooked on bouncing, dashing and blasting your way to the goal right until the very end. Planet Cube: Edge offers a balanced and rewarding experience that will definitely appeal to existing fans of the genre and surely create some new ones to boot. This one is well worth the price of admission and has a tonne of replay value for those really wanting to squeeze every drop of enjoyment out of their games.

Planet Cube: Edge is a great-looking 2D precision platformer that is incredibly challenging and rewarding at the same time. Due to its difficulty, a lot of players may be frustrated and defeated when they die almost 200 times in an hour to complete only one stage.

Planet Cube: Edge is a charming but padded experience. Most of the levels overstay their welcome, and this hurts what is generally an enjoyable experience. More certainly feels like less here, as I often found myself sighing as the gimmick of one screen was repeated more than a handful of times. Still, playing as Edge feels great, and as someone who enjoys his fair share of tough 2D platformers, I found the challenge more than met my expectations.

While Planet Cube: Edge is a decent game it lacks a certain “je ne sais quoi”. Its looks will have an appeal for Gameboy fans and its sounds will be nostalgic for many, but some frustrating gameplay quirks mean it ultimately falls short of greatness. The small team at Sunna Entertainment delivered quite a polished game here and I look forward to their next foray onto consoles.
