Shuffle Tactics takes some well-worn mechanics, shines them up, and executes them in fun and interesting ways. Each stage opens with a mess of dudes on a map, cut up into a grid, and some objective: kill all the dudes, take out the boss, things like that.

Shuffle Tactics looks incredible, but the nuance of its game design falls a bit short with an uneven difficulty curve, bugs, and less-than-meaningful progression. While still worth giving a try if you find the game interesting, it feels as though it could have really benefited from a playtesting period and may be more worth your time after some post-launch support from the devs. Try Hard Guides was provided a Steam code for this PC review of Shuffle Tactics.

Perhaps with a little bit of tweaking, Shuffle Tactics will begin a new trend or find some great footing. For now, it’s just a bit too much to be enjoyed by many. It will find an audience, but it may be quite niche. A bit more polish and maybe removal of some of the too much content and this might be a great way to bridge these genres together. Shuffle Tactics was reviewed on PC via Steam.

Shuffle Tactics has some great bones and ideas. If anything, it feels like a great candidate for Early Access balancing and bug fixing. However, it is a full release and one that retails for $14.99. Because of this, it is taking a bit more scrutiny from me in its present state. I would love to be able to experience the rest of the bosses and levels, but with the level of difficulty being as it is, it’s hard for me to not want to “wait and see” for now before taking on the path to King Ogma again.

Shuffle Tactics has a good game somewhere in it, but that isn’t what it is presently. I wish the beautifully fluid art style matched the RNG-based gameplay. After my lack of success, I searched and saw player feedback again and again regarding the game’s balance, as well as some of the pain points I’ve brought up in this review. Shuffle Tactics may have been made in reverence to games like Slay the Spire and Final Fantasy Tactics, but Club Sandwich must revisit the game if they hope for it to be spoken in the same breath as those greats.
