Red Matter is one of the best PSVR titles I’ve played this year, both visually and mechanically. It takes full advantage of both Move Controllers as you swap between various tools in order to solve puzzles, investigate, and traverse. You have multiple methods of transport as well as an option for both snap and smooth turning (coming soon). This great VR puzzle adventure title will have you virtually scratching your head as you try to work out the solutions to the clever puzzles.

It’s a short game, taking about an hour or so to reach the end credits but the time is well spent and nothing feels wasted or padded for length. The game’s puzzles are just right, neither too easy or too hard, and in some cases make a great use of the facility’s retro-futurist technology. Some might balk over the absence of enemies or outright peril but hungry aliens, killer robots, or demon possessed soldiers would only serve as annoying distractions and just get in the way. All in all, Red Matter is an awesome science fiction yarn built with an eye for dreamy, retro futurism aesthetic.

Red Matter showcases what happens when you make VR interactivity the star, and lean into giving the player as much control as possible. The interactivity, immersion, and presentation are top shelf, and the atmosphere is one you shouldn’t miss.

Red Matter is nothing short of a textbook example of how to do VR adventure games right. It emphasizes design and experience, putting immersion front and center, making a bullet-proof case for why it needs to be seen and played in VR. Short length and some troublesome puzzles betray its winning streak to some degree, but don’t change the fact that this is one sci-fi story you shouldn’t miss out on. Red Matter is available now on Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Windows VR and PlayStation VR for $24.99.

All in all, Red Matter is a very high calibre VR experience, neatly weaving its story and puzzle elements together. It by no means perfect, following the line of other puzzles in VR that are seemingly unable to offer plenty of reasons to come back for more. So like a good meal take it slowly and savour the moment.

Red Matter is the most immersive puzzle game I’ve played in a long time, thanks in no small part to how well it makes use of VR is utilised. The lighting and textures are staggering, the plot is intriguing and the game is well worth looking into. The caveats to this are that you can’t be the kind of person who gets motion sickness in VR and you have to be reasonably good at puzzles or you will not finish the game. It’s a bit short considering the £25 price point, but still worth a look for VR aficionados and Cold War sci-fi fans.
