Lunark is one of the best 2D cinematic platformers I’ve ever played. Regardless of its retro inspirations, it makes its own impact on the genre with fun action, story delivery, and puzzle design. Much like a classic sci-fi film, I was immersed in this experience from beginning to end. Don’t miss out on this truly standout video game. This post may contain Amazon affiliate links.

Even with an inconveniently designed save system, Lunark is a game I’ll look back fondly on for reaching the highest of highs. It’s easily one of my favorite titles in recent years, one I’ll undoubtedly revisit. A must-play for cinematic platformer fans, Lunark’s full of surprises, bound to leave lasting positive impressions with players. If this is indie studio Canari Games’ first release, I can’t wait to see what they come up with next. Lunark is a carefully crafted flashback to the narrative platformers of the early-90s. With beautiful rotoscoped animation and a plot straight out of a Philip K Dick novel, it's one trip to another world well worth taking. 4.3 High tech low life Canari Games’ Lunark takes me back to a simpler time when I was knee-high to a hollow cube before I knew why androids dream of electric sheep, and Space Cowboy wasn’t my dream job. A lovingly crafted homage to Delphine Game’s classic action platformer Flashback – A rotoscoped cyberpunk epic with the narrative chops of a Philip K Dick novella.

This pretty cool throwback to the age of classic cinematic adventures like Out of This World (and others) is a retro treat For people who aren’t “vintage gamers” out there I’m not sure how to convey how mind-blowing the arrival of cinematic adventures were back in the day.

While I doubt Lunark will go down in history as one of the all-timers of cinematic platforming, it’s well-made enough that anyone who likes this underserved niche should check it out. The presentation is on point, the story and setting are intriguing, and the mechanics feel like a close cousin to Flashback. This flavor of game isn’t going to be for everyone, especially those lacking warm and fuzzies for the specific era it’s paying homage to, but the target it’s aimed at is going to have a blast with it. SwitchArcade Score: 4/5 GrimGrimoire: OnceMore ($49.99) I feel like GrimGrimoire was a case of a game that was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
