Hyperdrive Massacre
Hyperdrive Massacre or HDM is an 80s inspired arcade fragfest in Spacewar sauce designed around local multiplayer, focused on kinestetics, tactical and shooting skills at a very high pace. Players take control of a space cadillac shooting all sorts of lasers, dropping mines and raising bullet-deflecting shields, in a single-screen wrapping arena with no friction. By competing in all game modes, players are able to unlock more cars and arenas. HDM was born as a quick throwaway prototype by modifying an Asteroids template project in September 2014. By adding bullet-deflecting shields, removing the danger elements from the debris and placing another player in the scene, a frantic gameplay with plenty of possibilities for mastery emerged. The team has been working on HDM as a side project ever since, managing to land the game on the market in slightly more than a year. HDM is part of the ID@Xbox programme.

Hyperdrive Massacre understands what it is, and plays to its strength of frenetic multiplayer action to perfection.” The games co-op offering is at its best in 4-player deathmatch, much like the previously mentioned Rocket League, as players can exit on one edge of the screen and pop up out on the other side which creates a frenetic and stressful – but incredibly fun – environment.

Hyperdrive Massacre is a good game to start a nightlong session. It’s a good way to loosen everyone up or play while waiting for everyone else to arrive. It’s fun without being great, competent without being outstanding and engaging without being rewarding.

Although single-player options are available, Hyperdrive Massacre comes to life when two to four players cram close together in front of a large television screen. The solid, bright visuals, tongue-in-cheek feel, and retro sound all demand that the television get switched on and the extra pads be brought out during small parties. It's a blast to experience with others, not so much on your own. Our score: 7/10 Decent - A game that may have niche appeal, flawed but enjoyable. ICXM operates a zero tolerance policy with regards to trolling, flame baiting, name calling, console wars (including pro-Xbox) and any other form of toxic behaviour in our comments system.
