Rocking vibes from multiple arcade classics, Donut Dodo is an excellent and challenging remix Having grown up in the arcades I always approach retro-style arcade games with some trepidation.

Like a donut, Donut Dodo is a small, sweet confection that you’ll likely chew through in a few bites. But the delicious taste will having you reaching back into the box for another, and you’ll likely come back for more here and there as you go about your other business. Given the highly reasonable price point, this arcade game-that-wasn’t is a more than fair pick-up for those pining for the quarter-munching days of the 80s. Donut Dodo plays a loving homage to the old arcade days whilst bringing with it some modern improvements and a few tricks of its own to make it stand out from the competition. If Donut Dodo was an actual arcade cabinet, I would be happy to sink a few coins into it. But since this is the modern day, you can pay a small fee and enjoy some good high score chasing fun on TV or handheld.

Fans of classic arcade games should love Donut Dodo, mainly because it gives them something new. It’s not a port; it’s a new game that looks, sounds, and plays like it should’ve been released in 1982. It’s a clever, low-cost addition to your digital arcade.

As I have stated many times throughout this article, this is my first time playing a 2D arcade type game. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised, and I am incredibly fortunate that I was given the opportunity to play the game, as well as being fortunate that this was my first 2D arcade game, as it has certainly made me want to try out more. For the price of £3.59, I do not think you can go wrong, and you will easily get your money back in the fun of playing the game.

For those itching for some new oldies, Donut Dodo is the tribute you need. The controls take some getting used to, but those weaned on the classics will take to it like a dodo to water. We’ve all played the classics – Dig Dug, Donkey Kong, Pac-Man – but old school just isn’t getting any newer.

If you enjoy old-school arcade games as much as I do then you owe it to yourself to play the wonderful Donut Dodo. With accessible gameplay and challenging scoring mechanics as well as a genuine retro aesthetic and great music; there's a lot to munch on here.

Donut Dodo blends a lot of influences from classic ’80s games. You’ll spot elements of Pac-Man, the aforementioned Bomb Jack, BurgerTime, Bubble Bobble, Donkey Kong and numerous others as you play — but the way in which all these parts are blended together gives the whole game a distinctive feel rather than feeling like a quick and dirty ripoff of any of them. It’s an extraordinarily well-designed game, and while it certainly has the authentic early ’80s arcade game difficulty down to a fine art, it’s a game you’ll find yourself returning to time and time again. The port to Evercade is particularly noteworthy because it marks an important milestone for the platform: support for the popular Godot engine on which Donut Dodo is built.
