MONSTER
Dark Lord Bigunbad has - sigh - once again kidnapped the princess. But this time his evil schemes have gone too far and torn open a number of rifts between realities. You start where most platformers finish at the bad guy’s castle and run, jump, fly, fight and occasionally dance through the kingdom on your quest to unearth the truth behind these rifts and put a stop to Bigunbad, once and for all.

A Mash up game with surprising fun game play! 4 Fun , Nostalgic Concursion Developer: Puuba Publisher: Mastertronic Format: PC STEAM download Reviewer: Shael Millheim What happens when you take a handful of classic game genres and smash them all together? A possible train wreck? One might expect that, but new game developer Puuba took on the challenge and has proven that the feat can be done with cohesive style.

Most of the time, Concursion is a pleasure to play. It packs in a nice variety of game styles and never once comes across as repetitive. The boss fights are challenging, rewarding and never allow you to reach the boiling point of frustration.

Taken as a whole, Concursion is an interesting and fun title. The mixing of mechanics and genres provides some nice and varied gameplay to stand out in a positive way from the rest of the crowd.

It's a hard game to sum up. The flashes of genius in Concursion's construction are some of the freshest and most engaging gameplay I've seen from the indie scene in years. I want to be able to recommend it for that reason alone. But there's a lot of game surrounding those moments, and a lot of that game isn't particularly good. It's fiddly and annoying in a way that the best hardcore retro games - the Mega Mans and R-Types - never were. They were tough, they demanded superlative skill, but they gave you the tools to develop that skill.

While fans of 2D platformers will enjoy it, Concursion has rough edges when it comes to its slightly-unresponsive controls and overall gameplay smoothness. The cheap-looking graphics and forgettable soundtrack hurts things as well.
