Among Ashes is a gem of a game. The game’s novelty and harmony of its ideas and the way it continues these concepts are incredibly exceptional. A horror game within a horror game is imaginative and manufactures an interesting space to play in. Graphical throwbacks and gripping sound design increases your desire to find out what happened to the creator of this game you are playing. The pacing of the game and its horror elements are flawless and work remarkably together, but with how well the game is able to showcase its purpose, I can only wish that there was more of it. Game breaking glitches are never a good thing and could discourage some from even checking this out, but I guarantee that Among Ashes will grant you a horrifyingly amusing time.

Among Ashes succeeds as a refreshing take on the horror genre, delivering a unique mix of psychological tension and nostalgic homage that’s a lot of fun to experience. Its crafty ‘game within a game’ structure is effectively implemented to make for some genuinely clever puzzling and storytelling, whilst the throwbacks to the 2000s (and especially MSN Messenger) kept a smile on my face when playing. And sure, it does have some small setbacks with the clumsy combat, but it still manages to offer a satisfying horror experience that’s unique, enjoyable, and – most importantly – genuinely scary.

Despite these flaws, Among Ashes shines where it matters most. Its shortcomings don’t detract significantly from the overall experience. I highly recommend it to horror enthusiasts, though you might want to avoid playing it alone in the dark. The Final Word Among Ashes is a subversive horror game, capitalizing on the classic fear of being alone at your computer with your back to the door.
