After Wave: Downfall doesn’t do anything to stand out as a shoot ‘em up but it can still provide some fun, frantic action for fans. I would wait for a sale personally as I think that for a bit of a lower price you’ll be getting a pretty decent game here with some fun modes that you can play alone or with a friend. *After Wave: Downfall is available now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.

After Wave: Downfall was a game I enjoyed much more than I thought I would. It was chaotic and challenging and whilst some will love the fact achievements pop so quickly, I kind of wished they were a bit more difficult to get. The reason for this is some may simply get the 1000 gamerscore and then leave the game alone, and it deserves better than this. Whilst it visually passes for an early-gen Xbox 360 game in terms of its appearance, it actually feels fun to play and has great variance in enemy types, bosses and weaponry.

After Wave: Downfall is an arcade-style game that lacks refinement yet it's still undeniably compelling thanks to its frantic gameplay and enjoyable co-op implementation. Plus, the fact that you can unlock all sorts of upgrades and extra content is a nice bonus.

An interesting take on a shooter, but some wonkiness makes it hard to reach its level of ambition Always happy to give credit when it is due, there’s no doubt that After Wave: Downfall simply has its own visual and then play style, moving away from the classic pixel-based graphics and tackling the shmup genre with more of a low-ish poly look.
