Saying Blizzard outdid themselves is an understatement. When it comes to story and in-game elements, it might seem a little thin at first glance.

Dragonflight has been the revitalization that World of Warcraft sorely needed after Shadowlands. Yes, there are some issues that still could use some work, but that’s the nature of MMO development, especially when you change things up to such a degree as this expansion did. I’m also heartened to see them willing to make big adjustments like they have planned in 10.0.5. I honestly thought Guardians were going to have to suck it up until 10.1, at the least for a talent tree rework. If they can keep this up and regularly deliver content and adjustments, Dragonflight could be the best expansion World of Warcraft has ever done.

Veteran WoW players will be happy to see that professions have also had a rework, now holding some new crafting systems for quality and making the user stand out more. Certain jobs, such as Blacksmiths, can now craft better quality gear with bonuses, and if they stick with it, will find themselves in demand. The same can be said for any jobs that produce items to sell, like potions and cloth gear. As with any new expansion, players can expect new dungeons to explore for awesome loot and fun boss fights.

It's a compelling and enjoying jaunt through the usual World of Warcraft fare and removes much of the doom-and-gloom that made Shadowlands gradually become tiresome. It's also a reminder that the ceiling on WoW is ultimately only so high - technically and practically, there is only so much Blizzard can do with each expansion without risking remaking the game too much and losing its die-hard playerbase. For fans of WoW, Dragonflight is fantastic. Its end-game remains to be seen, but even the simple journey of leveling up and exploring the Dragon Isles is well worth the price of admission. For newcomers or lapsed veterans, it's still easy to recommend World of Warcraft: Dragonflight. It's just worth noting that, for all the new baubles and exciting innovations, it's ultimately the same game underneath it all, for better and for worse. For the first time in a long time, I feel like I have a healthy relationship with World of Warcraft. I'm playing because I want to, not because I need to. I'm driven by a new sense of exploration and comradery, rather than seeing a number tick up that I know will be lost to time. It does feel like the start of a new era for the gracefully aging MMO, and I'm excited to see what's next.

Dragonflight is sprinkled with little moments like these that encourage you to take your time and smell the roses, so to speak. Though there are still plenty of collectathons and kill quests to complete, Dragonflight shines when it reminds you of the unique world you're in and invites you to slow down and immerse yourself in it. It's an expansion about remembering where you've come from, yet embracing what comes next. It's about coming home. Considering the quality on display in Dragonflight and all the changes that have been made to improve the core systems of Blizzard's iconic RPG, I have no doubt more than a few lapsed players that had grown tired of what Azeroth had to offer in recent years will be doing just that.

Dragonflight feels like one of the best things to happen for World of Warcraft in sometime. Its reworks of base systems are fun and enjoyable, but its new content really stands out as impressive. Players will find exploring on their faithful companion, whether on the ground or in the sky, is quite the fun time, and the Dragon Isles themselves are well worth the journey. It may feel like jumping in the deep end here for newbies, but top to bottom, Dragonflight still feels like a great reason to play WoW. This review is based on a PC copy provided by the publisher.
