The entire formula seems simple on its surface, and maybe it’s been done before? But it’s never been done with this much aplomb and balance, and it’s never stoked gamers’ curiosity quite as much as it does here. Vampire Survivors looks simple, but it’s far more elegant than that, and it contains just one flaw right now: It lacks any sort of survival mode. Each level ends when it’s supposed to, when Death comes to take you (although there’s fun to be had here, too).

Vampire Survivors is not only my game of 2022, but it is also my biggest surprise of the year. It has a moreish gameplay loop like I have never experienced before, and it really has the opportunity for endless replayability and longevity. The levelling process and the spontaneous nature of what abilities the game throws at you each time you can make a choice makes for a different experience each and every time. The inclusion of several starting characters and levels with a huge plethora of enemy types with over 100 power-ups just brings unlimited addiction.

You will find yourself devising new ways to turn this game into an AFK gold farmer, losing sleep over the most effective builds, and chasing every achievement like never before. You have been warned – the grind can and will consume you. You will like it. You will definitely get your money’s worth and then some more. Also, there are a lot of funny references in the game, related to Castlevania and other pop culture and meme phenomenons (won’t spoil anything else) and there are many plays on words in Italian. At the time of writing, I have accrued 163 hours playing Vampire Survivors and I’ll no doubt reach over 200 given that Poncle has promised that v1.0 is not the end and that they will keep working on the game until either they or the community get bored of it. Right now, VS has 125,648 reviews on Steam, with 124,188 being positive, equalling out to 98.84% positive.

Vampire Survivors on Switch is everything I hoped for in a port and more. While it has some frame rate issues, which version of the game doesn’t at this point? If you somehow haven’t played it through its Xbox, mobile, or PC release, this is it. I didn’t get to try the DLC yet, but Vampire Survivors is a perfect fit for Switch, and absolutely worth buying right now. Hopefully poncle can add in cross save support at some point so I can go from Xbox Series X to iPhone to Steam Deck to Nintendo Switch with my save file. -Mikhail Madnani SwitchArcade Score: 5/5 Brotato ($4.99) If you’re familiar with Brotato at all, you might be wondering why it is worth getting when Vampire Survivors is available on Switch this week.

Vampire Survivors feels amazing value. It is ridiculously cheap and has a gameplay hook that refuses to let go. I worry that many may take a look at the simple visuals and the Xbox Store description before fast turning away, but I urge you to please try this game. Vampire Survivors is without doubt up there as one of the finest indie games of the year.

In conclusion, Vampire Survivors is a gem. It’s a wonderful example of a successful indie game that has a simple concept but executes it perfectly. The catchy tunes in the background and the retro pixelated art combine to create an entertainingly addictive experience, and it’s even well priced – including all the DLC in the core price.
