Turbo Overkill is honest in its simplicity, absurdity, and authenticity. It works to interpret 30-year-old shooters for a modern audience, one who yearns for fast-paced, rewarding action in a space that so frequently asks for polish and patience. On console, it performs outstandingly, capturing the essence of the mouse and keyboard days. And if that isn’t enough to grab your attention, don’t forget: you’ve always got a chainsaw leg.

Turbo Overkill is pure, unadulterated, unpretentious, yet focused action bliss. The retro-inspired visuals are easily the least interesting aspect because everything else is mind-blowingly exemplary. The imaginative level designs, the wealth of abilities, and the unrelenting gunplay and chainsaws push Turbo Overkill into the pantheon of the best first-person shooters of all time. Turbo Overkill was reviewed on an Xbox Series X using a code provided by Trigger Happy Interactive.

It lacks a compelling story, and its efforts to vary things up are not always successful, but Turbo Overkill is a consistently exciting and often great-looking shooter. Like Cultic, it is a startling example of how much can be achieved by a one-person developer. Fans of retro shooters, so well catered to in recent years, should be sure to find time to spend time with Johnny Turbo.
