SOPA – Tale of the Stolen Potato is a lovely adventure title that shows just how creative storytelling you can be with the smallest of foods. It encapsulates a piece of Latin America within its gorgeous art, enchanting music, and engaging puzzles. Technical issues do eventually compound to make for a bit of a cumbersome experience, but I can look past that to recommend this adventure to all. ∎

Miho’s 5-hour adventure is one that’ll be sticking with me for a while and it is one that I plan to come back to with my young children when they’re ready to play video games. Like the best kids movies, there are important moral and social messages within that I believe this game can be a conduit to communicate. Though entirely suitable to a younger audience, SOPA is a game that I comfortably enjoyed as a mature gamer.

A colourful kid friendly adventure with plenty of laughs and heart. 3.5 Just like nana used to make Sopa: Tale of the Stolen Potato is a whimsical, family-friendly adventure boiling over with laughs and plenty of heart. Our story begins with Sopa’s precocious protagonist, a young boy named Miho, tasked by his Nana with retrieving a potato from the pantry for the soup. A simple request, until the sack of spuds at the back of the larder is pilfered by a felonious frog and Miho is literally dragged into a strange world of Latin American folklore, myth, and frogs with a penchant for fedoras. After giving chase down the river in a hastily constructed boat made of an old washing-up tub and a broom, the game begins proper, and Miho is left to hunt for the missing maris pipers. Sopa is a fairly straightforward 3D adventure game in the LucasArts tradition.

SOPA serves up a whimsical broth of hat-wearing frogs, stolen potatoes, and love for the adventure genre, but it feels just a little light on seasoning and should have stewed for a little while longer. Definitely worth picking up in a sale if you’re looking for a short adventure with a light-hearted tone, just know that it won’t keep you busy for long. Robby lives and breathes video games.
