MONSTER
Solo is a puzzle exploration game in which a sailor is traveling through a vast archipelago, solving puzzles, wondering about love. A personal experience both for puzzle lovers and creative indie games aficionados. Solo is a game about love. About love as fuel, the force that drive us. It is a universal feeling, but each of us experiences it in a different way. Individually, it holds different meanings depending on a variety of factors such as: culture, gender, sexuality or traumas. That's why Solo will explore this theme in an introspective way, to have the players identify and reflect on their own experiences.

While mileage will certainly vary, Solo is an introspective trip worth taking. Is it love to find a matching tempo? This is the question that greeted me as I began my journey through Solo: Islands of the Heart.

If you’re a sentimental person, playing through Solo will undoubtedly make you think about your life and those you hold most dear. And even if you’re not quite the mushy type, the game’s to-the-point way of asking you questions will make you take a look inside yourself. The puzzles aren’t going to be the most complex you’ve ever faced, but they’re fun enough and their open-ended solutions means you can take your time and approach a situation in your own way.

Solo: Islands of the Heart seems like it’s trying to be your counselor. Go to an actual counselor. The gameplay is calming, the scenery is cute, the colors are vibrant, the design is unique, and the puzzles require a good amount of thinking without being too easy, but its attempt to analyze a real human person with pre-determined questions starts it off teetering on the wrong foot. It never quite regains its balance. * The product in this article was sent to us by the developer/company. I've been involved with games since I was a little kid, when I would watch my father play World of Warcraft for hours—and later, of course, mooch off of his account.

Despite its flaws, Solo: Islands of the Heart is an interesting experiment which weaves its puzzler gameplay and mature themes together well. Some design choices and technical issues hold the game back from being truly remarkable, but going in with an open mind and allowing myself some vulnerability delivered an emotional trip I hadn’t quite experienced from a game before.
