Zen Pinball takes us away from the bright lights of the standard pinball venue and sends us to the dark basement to play the grizzly horror themed tables of our nightmares. 4.8 Pinball Perils Zen Pinball are back but not quite as we are used to… this time we are venturing into the dark dank basement to play a collection of Horror pinball tables. I was honestly not aware this was Zen until I started it… but very happy to find they were behind it as their track record (for me at least) is impressive.

Just like Pinball FX, the tables look and play fantastic. Sure I would have loved to have a 120fps mode to match my TV, but each table looked unique and truly represented its franchise quite well. While having two titles, Pinball FX and Pinball M, might confuse some, Pinball M is arguably the ‘better’ title simply given the fact that Zen Studios didn’t try and nickel and dime with shady Pinball Passes or useless microtransactions. With a wealth of horror based games and movies, I’m hoping to see more tables come to Pinball M in the future, as its success will be based on continual table additions. Make a Friday the 13th, Nightmare On Elm Street, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween or SAW based table in the future and I’ll continue to come back for a bloody good time.

A more mature pinball experience, Pinball M will not only delight horror fans with its creepy machines, but also appease those who were left disappointed with the recent Pinball FX.

Overall, the core of Pinball M is not that much different from that of Pinball FX. If you’ve played that game, once you spend a minute or two adjusting to the new menu layout you’ll be right at home. It would have been nice if you could have kept your collection of tables all in one place, but at least this separation allows the skilled designers at ZEN Studios to explore more themes – although the studio has toned down mature licenses in the past such as Borderlands. You can take it out for a test spin for free, and if you like what you see you can pick up another table or two, or go all in for about $20 at the time of this writing. ZEN Studios has consistently been providing new content based on new franchises to Pinball FX, so it’s likely that you’ll see Pinball M’s selection of tables continue to grow in the future.

Aside from some surprisingly gory moments, in Chucky’s table in particular, there isn’t much here that Pinball FX players haven’t already seen many times before, making Pinball M a far from essential buy. Yet, it’s more of the studio’s trademark bloody brilliant (pun intended) pinball mechanics, with a couple cool additions, a better progression system and none of the controversial elements of the previous game. Sure it doesn’t have the crazy list of available tables of the other games, but it’s not meant to replicate that game, just to offer something slightly different as a side dish. And that is reason enough to recommend Pinball M to all fans of the pins and metal balls – provided they’re up for the M-rating of these violent tables!

Thanks to being able to jump in for free, you can’t really go wrong with Pinball M. Featuring the same solid physics as found in Pinball FX along with its its comprehensive list of play modes and features, this is yet another stellar pinball offering by Zen Studios. Jump in and give the free table a go, then if any of the DLC tables pique your interest, expand your game as you see fit. Best viewed as a companion to Pinball FX, it’s going to be interesting to see which tables based on more mature properties are added in the future.

I like Pinball M. I like Zen Studios’ work and I like the idea of a mature platform for adult pinball games. This launch is underwhelming, however, and rather than mildly more mature than all ages, Zen really should be looking to go all out. Drench our screen in blood, bring in some of the eroticism of horror, and really shock us, Zen. Make Pinball M both mature and comprehensive, and these two platforms of yours really could exist side-by-side effectively.
