MONSTER
The game is set on the imaginary island-kingdom of Ruswal, where nights are plagued by Azure-blooded demons. Although it is dangerous for humans to leave their homes after dark, the brave knights known as the Curia are trained to fend off the ever growing threat. Among them is Arnice, a warrior of great skill and the protagonist of Nights of Azure. While she’s skilled with a blade, her talents aren’t just a product of her training. Arnice has some demon blood herself and is actually the only human that has managed to touch azure blood and survive! This event hasn’t left her unscathed and its thrilling implications become apparent quite early on; among others, it allows her access to a set of impressive abilities including the power to summon monsters to her aid in battle.

Nights of Azure is such a progressive, artful and rich experience that, much like other masterpieces such as Nier of Pandora’s Tower, is so incredibly special as much for its flaws and individuality as what it does well.

Nights of Azure originally released for PS4 in North America in early 2016, and now it has received a PC port to bless, or torment, the non-console gamers. Featuring a beautiful art style and soundtrack, Nights of Azure, while incredibly niche, is a soulful tale of love and friendship. For those who haven’t played or heard of the console release, players take up the role of Arnice, a knight of the Curia (division of the church), who is tasked with aiding in the cleansing of the demons that have been brought about when the Nightlord was killed and his blood shed across the land, transforming a great many things, and people, into demons.

Nights of Azure is a bit shorter than your average JRPG, but it jam-packs a ton of variety into its 20-25 hours of story — and if you stick around to collect everything afterward, you’ll have even more time to sink your teeth into the game’s various systems. On the combat side of things, the hack-and-slash at Nights’ core keeps things from getting too button-mashy by mixing it up with collectible Servan that can do the majority of the fighting for you, as well as an appealing transformation system and changeable set of weapons.

While possibly underwhelming to experienced JRPG fans, Nights of Azure still provides enjoyable battles with specific mechanics to play around with. In the end, Gust’s newest attempt in gameplay and even love story that forms and develops between two women is what makes Nights of Azure a unique experience and JRPG.

Nights of Azure is a solid action RPG. The large number and variety of Servans add a strategic element to the real-time combat.
