MONSTER
While you were battling the evil forces of D'Sparil, the other Serpent Riders were busy sowing the seeds of destruction in other dimensions. One such dimension is the decaying world where Hexen takes place. A world littered with the mangled corpses of nonbelievers and inhabited by the undead followers that executed them. Only three humans; a warrior, a mage and a cleric; have escaped the leaders' vicious spell. Now these brave souls have sworn to crush the evil regime that threatens to destroy the world forever. Separated upon entering the mystical portal, the three are forced to attempt on their own what they had hoped to do together: find Korax's stronghold, destroy him and restore order in the physical world. Become one of 3 heroes. Wield superhuman powers and lethal weapons. Walk. Run. Fly. Look all around. Inflict serious pain. Pillage your way through earthquakes, crumbling bridges and fog. Track down powerful artifacts and cast wicked spells. Four sick individuals can wreak havoc via network, two by modem.

Heretic + Hexen is yet another slam dunk for Nightdive Studios. This new release revamps both titles with modern controls, bonus content, and thoughtful changes to the core design that make each game a delight to play. Granted, these are still FPS titles from the mid-'90s, so your mileage will definitely vary, but for returning fans and those with a particular fondness for old-school 'boomer shooters', you really can't go wrong. Now let's get a native Switch 2 port with 120fps please, Nightdive.

This type of game design just doesn’t appeal to everyone, so while I can’t give this collection a perfect score, it is a must-buy for fans of old-school shooters. Verdict: 4.5 / 5 (Fantastic) PROS Excellent presentation at support for up to 4K and 120fps Fixes for major issues in both games, especially allowing you to switch classes in Hexen Two brand new campaigns for both games Excellent value of over 117 single-player maps, 120 deathmatch maps, and mod support for just $15 MSRP CONS The manuals for Heretic and Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders, which describe the game’s story and lore, are nowhere to be found This type of gameplay is niche and will not appeal to everyone What I’ve Played Played for 12+ hours.

Now, if we can just get Nightdive to give us a remaster of the original Aliens Vs. Predator from 1999, I really will be set. Yes, I know that there is the Aliens Vs. Predator Classic 2000, but I want Nightdive, specifically, to be on all these kinds of projects.

Heretic + Hexen has a good long run time, and with the DLC added in, there is a lot of content that will keep you playing for a while.

If you have fond memories of either, Heretic + Hexen is another must buy collection from Nightdive Studios. 4.5 Greetings Mortal Heretic + Hexen is another outstanding package from Nightdive Studios, which elevates and modernises Raven’s cult classics while showing an impressive level of deference to the original titles. Hot on the heels of System Shock 2 remaster (review here), Nightdive has returned to shadow drop another duo of classic ID Tech1 FPS at Quakecon, following a similar template to last year’s Doom + Doom II, Nightdive’s latest duo of 90s FPS not only includes ports of Heretic and Hexen as they were when they first launched almost 30 years ago (along with their expansions), but brand new episodes developed by Nightdive, with Heretic receiving Faith Revived, and Hexen getting the Vestiges of Grandeur. Heretic is probably one of the best Doom clones of the era, originally released in 1994 and catching the eye of ID’s own John Romero, who would act as a producer on the title.
