Overview

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the sequel to Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets for PC and Mac, and features similar action-adventure and platforming gameplay. The player controls both Harry as well as his friends Ron and Hermione, while casting spells, solving puzzles and fighting enemies. When not engaged in a specific mission, the castle of Hogwarts can be freely explored. Scattered all around Hogwarts, usually in hidden areas, are Every Flavour Beans, Pumpkin Pasties and Cauldron Cakes, which function as a sort of currency. They can be traded for Collectors Cards, passwords for portraits that lead to more secret areas, and power-ups.

From monster books on the loose, to rascally pixies, to angry ghosts, there’s no shortage of content. On this point alone, I could recommend the game. But there are some disappointments, too.

Assorted reference devices, including the handy Marauder’s Map as well as shields and character cards to collect, add a little more depth to the action. The game remains faithful to the spirit of the book, but it is perhaps a little too linear and predictable. Some scenes do not look quite right — the scale of the characters against the width of the Hogwarts Express clearly do not tally.

I thought sometimes, though, that being the same made it a bit tedious. Getting to play three people (and a bunny) helped make it interesting, and made it more like the books, where Harry often needs his friends' help. Even though I thought it was a bit easy, it was still fun to play, and you might get most enjoyment out of this if you haven't played one of the others.
