Overall, Ginger: Beyond the Crystal is a fun and colorful collect-a-thon platformer with plenty of things to do during your adventure. Something I do want to mention is that the loading times for the game are considerable, so hopefully that is something that can soon be patched by the developer, as has been the case for other recent Nintendo Switch releases.

So many games that try to retrace the footsteps of old games fail to capture any of the soul that made those games great. Ginger: Beyond the Crystal is a game that does capture the essence of old games while improving the game’s controls and graphics. I do think Ginger would have been better with a stronger story and a reduction of random variance.

Ginger: Beyond the Crystal may be the best 3D platformer available on the Xbox One currently, but this says more about the state of the genre as opposed to the actual game. Aside from the incredibly frustrating checkpoint glitch though, I did have fun with this game and the nostalgia was cranked up high. For fans of any of the aforementioned games, you will find something you like here.

Ginger: Beyond the Crystal borgt sich von den richtigen Spielen Ideen aus, scheitert aber so ziemlich überall in der Umsetzung. Egal ob in Sachen Performance, Story, Kreativität oder auch Gameplay: Es fehlt bei dem Adventure leider an allen Ecken und Enden. Außer einer für das Genre gelungenen Steuerung und kleinen Lichtblicken im Gameplay, bleibt leider wenig positiv über Ginger zum sagen. Wer einen simplen Platformer für seine Kinder oder einfach für zwischendurch sucht, wird zumindest einige Stunden unterhalten werden.

It’s got a lot of little issues or oddities, but it hard charm and heart, and at the center of it all is a decent platforming title. Favorite moment: Unlocking more levels and the classic platforming feel I miss from the genre. Worst moment: The various little quirks.
