While many may have dreams of virtually enjoying the full Dutch Harbor experience, this is simply a tedious mess In general I’ll open by admitting that, on average, simulations like this where you generally have to manually perform every task, no matter how dumb or clunky, tend to wear out my patience quickly.

Deadliest Catch: The Game had the almost admirable ability to make me not want to either take up crab fishing in real life, nor to find out what the eventual endgame of its videogame counterpart was.

I must confess that I have never watched the Deadliest Catch TV show but upon hearing the game’s title, I was intrigued. I envisioned hunting down a vicious shark, the waves smashing the boat and travelling at breakneck speeds. It was certainly a surprise when I discovered that the “deadly catch” comes in the form of crab-fishing but is the game on troubled waters? Find out in this Rapid Review. Crab-catching Cycle The core gameplay loop of simulation game Deadliest Catch is simple and repetitive.

If you’re a hardcore fan of Deadliest Catch, you might—might—eke some enjoyment from the video game version’s lazy simulation of the tasks. However, you’d have a much better time just watching the show with a controller in your hand, and pretending. You might get a more responsive experience, too.

Even without the game breaking bugs, Deadliest Catch: The Game will test your patience with its monotony and repetitiveness. I’m actually a fan of ‘boring’ simulator titles like these, but when the game is constantly a frustration and requires you to restart through no fault of your own, it’s difficult to recommend until hopefully fixed. With a big name endorsement I was hoping to be competing against some of the great Captains and iconic ships, but with the lack of any multiplayer and more bugs than crabs, it might be best to wait until next season to go crabbing.

Deadliest Catch: The Game is dull, hard to operate and looks awful. Most importantly, the way that the controls operate manage to suck what little fun going crabbing has out of the game. The result is a mess that you would do well to avoid.

I appreciate that the devs/publishers have a steam bundle called ‘Deadly Bakery’ that just about justifies this game’s existence. Utterly woeful at every turn, and best avoided. This game was reviewed based on Xbox One review code, using an Xbox Series S|X console.
