Overview

In 2019, Kalypso Media Group announced that a new 'Commandos' title was in development and last year it revealed that newly formed Claymore Game Studios was working on a next-generation installment in the Commandos strategy series. Commandos: Origins tells the story of a newly founded British commando unit that grows into a brotherhood during its operations against strategic goals of the German Wehrmacht. The player will control different characters with different abilities from an isometric perspective of the playing field and use them strategically in such a way that the given mission goal is achieved. So you will work your way through the various missions based on historical locations and missions to the respective goal.

The overall sentiment regarding the story of Commandos: Origins reflects a shared appreciation for its historical setting and the nostalgic elements it brings to fans of the original series. Critics like Generación Xbox and Gamepressure highlight the game’s focus on the origins of the Commandos during World War II, emphasizing the introduction of iconic characters like Jack O'Hara and the Green Beret. The narrative backdrop, while primarily serving as a vehicle for gameplay, is noted for its potential to evoke nostalgia, particularly by critics such as Vandal and Shacknews, who appreciate the return to the roots of the franchise. The game’s setting and premise resonate well with those familiar with the Commandos series, providing a familiar context for players. However, the negatives largely overshadow the positives, as many critics express disappointment in the story's execution. Eurogamer Germany and CD-Action point out that the narrative is superficial and lacks depth, with minimal character interactions and a fragmented structure that leaves missions feeling disconnected. Critics like Game8 and Gameliner echo this sentiment, describing the story as a "token narrative" that fails to engage players or leave a lasting impression. The absence of a cohesive storyline and reliance on loading screens for information rather than cutscenes further detracts from the overall experience, as noted by Gamesurf and IGN Deutschland, who criticize the lack of a continuous narrative thread. In conclusion, the consensus among critics is that while Commandos: Origins has a promising premise rooted in historical context and nostalgia, it ultimately falls short in delivering a compelling and engaging story. The game is characterized by a series of disjointed missions that prioritize gameplay over narrative depth, leading to a lack of emotional investment in the characters and their journeys. As highlighted by multiple reviewers, including Shacknews and Cultura Geek, the game's narrative shortcomings may disappoint players seeking a rich story experience, despite its strategic gameplay elements. Overall, Commandos: Origins seems to cater more to fans of the gameplay mechanics than to those looking for a robust narrative.

The gameplay of Commandos: Origins has been largely praised by critics for its emphasis on strategic planning, stealth mechanics, and the utilization of unique character abilities. Reviewers such as Eurogamer Germany and Generación Xbox highlight the game's focus on teamwork and tactical decision-making, which requires players to observe their surroundings carefully and devise intricate strategies to succeed in challenging missions. The inclusion of a difficulty selector, as noted by Generación Xbox, further caters to a range of player skill levels, making the game accessible yet challenging. However, several critics have pointed out notable flaws that detract from the overall experience. TheXboxHub and TheSixthAxis mention issues with gamepad controls that hinder gameplay, while others like CD-Action and GameMAG criticize the presence of bugs and AI problems that disrupt immersion and gameplay flow. Additionally, some reviewers, including Games.cz and GameStar, express concerns about the linearity and repetitiveness of the gameplay, suggesting that it lacks the depth and innovation expected from a strategy title. The balance of character abilities has also been questioned, with Ragequit.gr noting that some elements feel diluted, making the game easier than anticipated. Overall, the consensus among critics is that while Commandos: Origins successfully retains the core elements of strategic stealth gameplay that fans of the series have come to love, it is marred by technical issues and a lack of innovation. Many reviewers, including IGN and PCGamesN, appreciate the meticulous and demanding nature of the gameplay, but they also acknowledge that the experience can feel slow and overly precise at times.
