Anima Gate of Memories: I&II Remaster brings the graphics a lot more up to date compared to the 2018 release." The character models, backgrounds, and lighting have all been improved, and outdoor locations, such as the Great Plains, appear bright and appealing. A lot of the game, though, takes place in darker, duller places, such as mansions and towers, which lessens the overall visual effect.

The Anima games are unique in almost every aspect, and in a world where everything seems to want to be the same thing, it is a breath of fresh air. I loved these games when they came out originally, and I loved revisiting them for this review. If you never got a chance to check these out, I cannot recommend them enough. Sure, they have hard edges, but once you get past those, both games are some of the most interesting and unique action RPGs I have played. Definitely worth checking out.

Anima: Gate of Memories I & II Remaster is a collection of two very low-budget action JRPGs that I really enjoyed. Anyone looking for something in the vein of Nier should definitely consider playing it. The changes in this remaster are almost entirely cosmetic, though, and probably won’t justify a double dip for anyone with the original games. The price is very low, though, and there’s a lot of content to be found. Hopefully, developer Anima Project gets enough attention to develop games on a grand scale in the future.

Anima: Gate of Memories is decent, and I did enjoy my time with it overall. But the repetitive combat and clunky mechanics hold it back from being truly fun. I do think though that most people who decide to pick it up will enjoy it especially for the current price. The story is interesting, the world is varied, the graphics overhaul is well done, but with the remaster you aren’t getting much new content just a collection with a face lift. Anima: Gate of Memories I & II Remaster brings two ambitious cult action RPGs back into the spotlight with sharper visuals, smoother performance, and a clearer presentation of their dense lore. The core experience is still uneven with dated design, clunky movement, and occasionally awkward voice work remain, but the improvements make the journey far easier to appreciate. It’s a flawed yet fascinating return, especially for those who enjoy old-school, Nier- or Drakengard-style oddities and want a polished way to revisit (or finally discover) this universe. 3.6 Gothic Grandeur Anima’s remaster opens the gate again and what comes through is surprisingly captivating! Anima Project returns to its roots with Anima: Gate of Memories I & II Remaster, a unified and enhanced collection of the original Gate of Memories (2016) and its companion title The Nameless Chronicles (2018).
