MONSTER
You are a journalist summoned by an aged explorer who has been "branded" with questionable credibility for over 50 years. The old explorer's tale tells of traveling to the mysterious Central American country, called Amerzone. His story claims that the large egg that he brought back was associated with native Indian tribal beliefs and rituals involving the proliferation of great white birds that fly continuously from the time that they are born and never land seems incredible. But curiosity and the opportunity for a good story will probably get the best of you...

Point and click adventure puzzle games are definitely not my usual genre of choice. That being said, sometimes it is good to get outside of your comfort ‘Amerzone’. The quality of the writing and presentation in this remake do more than enough to justify giving Amerzone: The Explorer’s Legacy a try. Once you start to unravel the mysteries of the white bird egg, you’ll want to see the story through to its conclusion. As a puzzle game it will keep you guessing with novel conundrums and unorthodox solutions. It does have a bit of that Indiana Jones explorer vibe, just without the action and shooting (which some people may actually prefer). I have intentionally included no screenshots of puzzles in this review as to not spoil this adventure.

Amerzone—The Explorer’s Legacy is a visually stunning masterpiece that blends a beautifully crafted world with a genuinely engaging storyline. Despite being a remake, it retains an original and unique feel that sets it apart from modern titles.

The 2025 remake of Amerzone – The Explorer’s Legacy is a worthwhile journey whether you’re returning to its familiar rivers and jungles, or if it’s your first time strapping into a Hydrafloat. You will best enjoy it if you take your time and let it sweep you into the well-thought-out pace retained from the original game’s designer, the late Benoît Sokal, who passed away in 2021. From intro to credits, it is an unabashedly classic adventure.

Developer Microids Studio Paris took a well-written story and a well-made game (for 1999) and completely reimagined it for 2025. Amerzone: The Explorer’s Legacy shows that they dove into the PS5 hardware with both feet and utilized haptics with the controller, as well as utilizing the adaptive triggers in several different areas. They recreated some of the original puzzles while creating a bunch of new puzzles that may test your overall IQ.

Amerzone – The Explorer’s Legacy is the kind of game that probably would never have gotten a remake if Microids wasn’t still around and had people on staff who worked with Benoît Sokal, and cared deeply about his legacy and of the imaginative and fantastical worlds he created in his games. While this remake is perhaps a bit too faithful to the 1999 original, it nonetheless shows considerable care and respect for its source material, and wants to create a remake worthy of that legacy. Indeed, the remake is dedicated to Sokal and his memory. On this objective, Amerzone is clearly a success.
