The game certainly has its issues, namely its slightly buggy AI and difficult-to-learn control scheme, which might be problematic for a lot of people looking to jump into the world of virtual AFL for the first time. But, that doesn’t mire an otherwise fun sports game.

Like Evolution before it, AFL Evolution 2 is the best of the footy games. Of course, the bar isn't a high one, though it's fortunate in a way that it's the core gameplay experience that does the heavy lifting. Modes can be fixed, patched and reworked with less work, so knowing that the foundation is rock-solid is a bonus for Wicked Witch as they'll no doubt return time and again in pursuit of the holy grail.

There’s more fun to be had here than the past couple of games, and it feels like it’s been made with more passion, by AFL fans, for AFL fans who desperately want an AFL game to play. The unwaveringly serious supporters amongst them will still fume about the little discrepancies, but they are nowhere near as bad as last time, while general sport games enthusiasts will find it too clunky, unpolished and repetitive to carve out multiple seasons.

While I would love to say that this title is an authentic, Aussie Rules Footy experience in your hands, I just can’t approve of the numerous dilemma’s it carries. If there was anything positive to take from the title itself, it’s that AFL Evolution 2 is a playable experience, but one you would ultimately walk away from questioning its existence.
