Project Tower stands out in some places, namely with its gorgeous level design and bullet-hell boss fights, but leaves something to be desired with its core mechanic, which feels underutilized and unnecessarily restrictive. The game is worth checking out if you’re interested, but the short experience may feel a bit railroaded.

Overall, my thoughts on the morphing feature reflect my thoughts on Project Tower as a whole. It’s a small and very ambitious project from a tiny indie team, and what they’ve accomplished is great, but it seems like a jumping off point for a bigger more fleshed out game. As mentioned above the enemy variety is there, however the number of enemies you face on each floor before the boss is very small, so you don’t really get to know the biome they’re in before you’re in the arena fighting the boss.

The visuals and designs are all great, and the gameplay can be fun, but it feels like something is missing, combined with slippery controls and an annoying camera.

Project Tower is ultimately a mish-mash of different ideas that never synergies into a compelling experience. The morphing mechanic is severely under-utilized, and while the boss fights are a definite highlight, there’s just not enough here to recommend as anything but a Returnal clone gone wrong.

Project Tower has a lot of good ideas and can be fun at times, but it’s hindered by its lack of polish. The combat can be engaging, but quickly becomes frustrating thanks to the lack of smooth controls and animations. The story has an intriguing premise, but the game never commits to expanding on the universe it so desperately wants you to connect with. And even though the game is beautiful, the basic missing technical components give the game this unfinished feel. However, I will say that, for a debut game, Yummy Games has created something to be proud of.
