I enjoyed the novelty of the interface along with the ability to experiment with maximizing different character classes. There are some genuinely cool moments that harken back to classic RPGs, especially around the boss fights. Because of the threat of perma-death, they felt especially tense and I had to psych myself up before I took on the Big Bad. Despite some repetitive content, the overall experience was fresh and fun. Score: 85/100 Kingsway came out for PC only on July 18.

Like all successful pieces of nostalgia, Kingsway knows the adventure on the screen is less important than the adventure in your mind. Kingsway took me far down those winding paths, deeper and deeper with each hesitant chitter of nonexistent hardware. Kingsway was reviewed using a pre-release Steam key provided by Adult Swim Games.

Kingsway is ingenious, simply put. It has a brilliant attention to detail that is well-thought out. I implore you to play Kingsway to see it for yourself. It doesn’t entirely rely on its nostalgia for it to work. There’s a bit of repetition in its encounters and quests, but that’s really a small issue in what’s a largely enjoyable and highly replayable game. You’ve not played anything like Kingsway before, and it is a game demanding a place on your hard drive that will stay for the foreseeable future.

The gimmick of Kingsway is rather glorious, but the grandeur fades quickly as you take up your sword and staff for the third or forth completion run. The novelty of Kingsway is quite potent, but it just doesn’t have any staying power. As something to hammer out in a day and put down never to play again, it’s a fun diversion – but don’t count on it to keep you exploring the ever-changing island for much longer than that.

Kingsway has a great interface, but it has a lackluster gameplay. I want the gameplay to be better than it was because it has a nostalgic feeling for me, but it doesn’t hook the player like it could. Stats: 4 hours played 0/21 achievements earned. I bought this game as part of the Humble Bundle Extra Life 2017 charity bundle.
