MONSTER
In the year 2998, humanity has finally reached the stars, and was able to build a prosperous, peaceful society. However, a space matter known as the Black Nebula began to spread, threatening to engulf the galaxies controlled by humans. It turned out that a robotic dictator named Super Mech was behind this occurrence. The Earth sends Captain Lancer, a skillful pilot navigating the powerful CNCS1 aircraft, equipped with the most powerful weapon: the Hellfire... This is a horizontal space shooter, with the traditional premise of a lone pilot traversing hostile areas and out-manoeuvring and/or destroying quick and numerous enemies.

Really outside of the manual coin option being borked, I do feel that as a means to introduce yourself to this game and see what Toaplan’s other horizontal shooter was all about, Bitwave did a damn fine job at bringing over Hellfire with all sorts of goodies, and considering this comes right off the heels of M2’s impressive port, Hellfire is just a glimmer of what I feel this team is capable of providing once they manage to smooth out the annoyances and bugs in the other ports. Whether you like the calculated approach of the 1P version, or the recovery hell of the 2P version, this is one excellent horizontal shooter you’ll be coming back to again and again, and I am super thrilled to have this game out and easily accessible for scorechasing fun.

Hellfire is an incredibly engaging SHMUP with a unique weapon system, exciting environments to traverse, and plenty of challenge. Its fantastic soundtrack and interesting look make it a memorable experience that I would encourage any fan of the genre to check out. Just be prepared to die. A lot.
